The Written Examination
Application for the Written Examination
Trainees may apply to sit for the examination in paediatric medicine following the satisfactory completion of 24 months of basic training, or its full time equivalent, or later.

Approval of basic training by the CPPT is necessary before trainees are permitted to take the examination. The application form must contain details of basic training that has been verified and signed by the relevant DPPT.

Forms are available from the DPPT, the Examination Section of the College in Australia or the College office in New Zealand.

The closing dates for applications for the Written Examination each year are in the Basic Training section of the College website under Written Examination.
Fees
A fee is payable at the time of application for the Written Examination.

Locations and Date of Examination

The Written Examination is usually held on the first Tuesday in March in all capital cities of Australia, the 5 main centres of New Zealand and in such other centres as may be determined from time to time.

The date for the next Written Examination is published in RACP News and in the Basic Training section of the College website under Written Examination, or is available from the Examinations Section of the College office in Australia or the College office in New Zealand.

Format of the Examination

The Written Examination in paediatric medicine consists of 2 multiple-choice papers, taken on the same day, as follows:
Paper 1: Medical Sciences (2 hours - morning);
70 A-type questions (single best response of 5 alternatives);
questions will test the knowledge of principles of medicine and basic sciences applicable to paediatric medicine.
Paper 2: Clinical Applications (3 hours-afternoon);
100 A-type questions (single best response of 5 alternatives);
questions will assess investigational material and test the knowledge of the practice of clinical paediatric medicine and therapeutics.
