AFOEM President's Awards

Nominations for 2024 closed 30 November 2023.

The Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) President’s Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by Fellows and trainees to the Faculty.

There are 3 award categories:

  • education, training and assessment — Fellows or trainees who have contributed significantly to AFOEM’s education, training and assessment programs
  • policy and advocacy — Fellows or trainees who have contributed to AFOEM’s policy and advocacy
  • trainee commitment — trainees who have shown an outstanding commitment to AFOEM’s education and training program

2023 Recipients 

dr mary wyattDr Mary Wyatt | Policy & Advocacy

Mary is an occupational physician who is active in policy development and research through AFOEM and other organisations.  Her interest is in getting research into practice.  Decades of work in injury management has included running an early intervention case management approach across several medium to large employers.  Other work has included IMEs, running RTWMatters.org (a non-profit seeking to share evidence-based practices that support better RTW), research on RTW, teaching via Monash University, work as a treating practitioner, conducting a state-based review of return to work for a regulator and advisory work for various insurers / regulators. 

Mary is the lead Fellow in AFOEM / RACP’s most recent Health Benefits of Good Work policy development – It pays to care: Bringing evidence-informed practice to work injury schemes helps workers and their workplaces.  An imperative for change and call to action.

michael-tombrosDr Michael Tombros | Trainee Commitment

Dr Tombros completed his studies at University College London (UCL) and Southampton University Medical School. He holds full specialist accreditation in Occupational & Environmental Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.  In addition to being a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (RACP) he has advanced degrees in both Occupational Medicine (PGDipOccMed) and Aviation Medicine (MAvMed) from the University of Otago.  

His clinical experience spans over 20 years including as a Medical Advisor, Aviation Medical Examiner, Medical Educator, and in a wide range of hospital and community-based medical roles. He is the current Director of Training for RACP AFOEM in New Zealand.

Eligibility

Nominees must be a registered Fellow or active Advanced Trainee of the AFOEM, nominated by a registered Fellow or active Advanced Trainee of the AFOEM.

Nominees are ineligible if they:

  • submit a nomination on their own behalf
  • have received a President’s Award within the last 3 years

Prize

Recipients of the AFOEM President’s Awards will each receive an AUD$300 gift card and award presented at the AFOEM annual event.

Nominate

Read the terms and conditions and notify your nominee of your intent before submitting your nomination.

Nominations must be submitted in a single PDF file, including:

  • a nomination form
  • a written citation highlighting the nominee’s contribution to the AFOEM and the College
  • 2 x letters of support from referees

Nominations received without a written citation will be rejected.

Selection process

An Award Review Panel, comprised of the AFOEM President and selected Fellows will review all nominations.

The AFOEM reserves the right not to make an award in any or all categories if all nominations received don’t meet a sufficiently high standard.
