What is short term training in a medical specialty?

International medical graduates (IMGs) can apply to work in an approved short term training in a medical specialty position in Australia for up to 24 months. Short term training in a medical specialty does not provide you with specialist recognition in Australia and does not lead to fellowship with the RACP.

Am I eligible for short term training in a medical specialty?

You are eligible for short term training in a medical specialty if you:

  • Are undertaking specialist training overseas and are within two years of completing your training, or
  • Have completed your specialist training overseas and want to gain experience in Australia (experience not available in your country of practice)

What are the fees for short term training in a medical specialty?

You will pay a fee for the RACP to assess your application for short term training in a medical specialty. To pay your fee, you will need to submit your application to the RACP and you will be given instructions for the completion of online payment. How do I apply?

To apply for short term training in a medical specialty in Australia, you must review the guidelines for short term training in a medical specialty before following the below steps:

  1. Find a training position

    To find a training position, contact hospitals or health services in Australia directly. The position may be at an accredited training site. See the list of accredited training sites.

    International Medical Graduates must find their own training position to apply for short term training in a medical specialty. The RACP is not responsible for finding training positions for applicants.

  2. Apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) for primary source verification (PSV) of your primary and specialist medical qualifications*. www.amc.org.au/assessment/psv.

    If you have not yet obtained your specialist medical qualification, you must provide a College or State Medical Council letter to confirm you are within two years of completion of specialist training. The qualifications must be verified before your position can be approved.

  3. Apply to the RACP for approval to commence short term training in a medical specialty (please apply at least eight to twelve weeks before the position start date). 

    The RACP must approve your position before you can commence short term training in a medical specialty. 

    The RACP does not accept handwritten documents. Please ensure that all RACP documentation is typed and submitted electronically to IMG@racp.edu.au.

  4. Get a work visa

    After you find a training position, your employer will contact the Department of Immigration to apply for your work visa.

  5. Register to practise in Australia

        Register with the Medical Board of Australia to practise in Australia.

Can I extend my short term training in a medical specialty?

Short term training positions are usually approved for 12 or 24 months and can be extended in exceptional circumstances. An extension due to work service reasons does not qualify for exceptional circumstances.

To apply to extend your short term training in a medical specialty, contact the RACP at img@racp.edu.au at least 3 months before your approved position ends with evidence of your exceptional circumstances.

What happens when I complete short term training in a medical specialty

When you complete your training, you must either:

  • Return overseas, or
  • Apply to join an AMC pathway that leads to ongoing practice in Australia. Be aware that joining an AMC pathway may take several months.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that steps are undertaken within the appropriate timeframes to join an alternative AMC pathway prior to the end of their approved training position.

Additional information

The Medical Board of Australia has released new guidelines on short term training in a medical specialty and guidelines on supervised practice for international medical graduates on 1 July 2016. Applicants and supervisors of international medical graduates should be aware of their responsibilities under these guidelines.

Applicants must communicate to the College any change in your circumstances that has an impact on your application, final assessment decision, or training program. This includes (but is not limited to) clear communication of any changes to arrangements for your position, including the sites where you are employed, changes to your duties and responsibilities, a new position with a different employer, changes to your approved training program and/or changes to the approved dates specified for your position.
