“I will attend my own health, wellbeing, and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard.”

The World Medical Association recently added this clause to the Declaration of Geneva in recognition of the often reported figures about burnout, depression and suicide in the health workforce.

These rates are typically twofold higher than they are in the general population, according to studies from New Zealand, Australia and around the world. Causes often given for psychiatric distress in the medical profession are the gruelling hours, the pressure of perfection, the unforgiving culture and the stigma associated with mental health issues.

The latest episode of Pomegranate Health, the RACP podcast, examines how healthcare systems might be shaped to improve physician wellbeing.

Cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood and General Practitioners Dr Margaret Kay and Dr Hilton Koppe are guests on this episode.

The episode also includes scenes from Grace Under Pressure – a play scripted word-for-word from interviews with doctors and nurses. It’s showing at the Seymour Centre in Sydney from 25 October as part of mental health month.
