RACP President, Dr Catherine Yelland, said the RACP Foundation together with its funding partners, will provide up to $2.5 million through its Fellowship program in the next year.

“These Fellowships have been made possible thanks to the generosity of College members and funding partners and will help Fellows and trainee physicians who wish to establish themselves in a research career,” Dr Yelland said.

“The funds can be used to carry out health research, clinical trials or pay for research expertise that we hope will translate into clinical practice.”

The Fellowships support research in a range of medical specialty areas represented by the RACP, including adult medicine, paediatrics and child health, addiction medicine, sexual health, public health, rehabilitation health, occupational and environmental medicine and palliative medicine.

The inaugural RACP and Endocrine Society of Australia Research Establishment Fellowship in 2018 has made Dr Mark Ng Tang Fui’s work possible.

He is conducting a clinical trial involving more than 1000 men – the largest of its kind in the world.

“How testosterone treatment reduces fat mass and affects bone fragility in obese men is the focus of my research,” Dr Ng Tang Fui said.

“This builds on an initial randomised controlled trial I conducted as part of my PhD. I hope to publish the findings of my work in high impact journals in the field of obesity, diabetes, bone health and internal medicine.

“The findings of my work will be directly applicable to patients under my care at the Men’s Health Clinic, Austin Health and other clinicians managing men with low testosterone levels.”

Applications are now open for the RACP Fellows Career Development Fellowship, Research Establishment Fellowships and Research Entry Scholarships for 2019.
