AChAM Communiqué March 2016
Read the highlights of key issues discussed as part of the 01-2016 meeting, held on 17 March 2016.
A number of existing Branch Chairs have continued for a further term, while Dr Cornelius Nydam is newly appointed to the QLD Branch Chair role and Dr Matthew Frei, the AChAM’s immediate past President has been appointed as the VIC/TAS Branch Chair. Dr Xiu Lim is the newly appointed trainee representative. Expressions of interest will be sought to fill the still vacant New Zealand Branch Chair position.
Policy and advocacy
The College held a successful alcohol policy launch on 3 March, with Prof Paul Haber having led this work. Dr Frei attended the 01-2016 AMD Council meeting also in March, which he felt was a very useful experience with all groups of the Division represented, including the Specialty Societies and Chapters. The Committee discussed the review of CPAC documents which had been flagged for archiving. It was agreed that major amendments were needed to the RACP Prescription Opioid Policy.
The Committee is undertaking a review of Foundation Awards, including consideration of changing the Essay Prize to a Research Prize to enable trainees to submit an already assessable piece of research work which is completed as part of their training. A Fellows’ Update will take place at the APSAD Conference on Monday 31 October 2016. Items of discussion may include the new Addiction Medicine Medicare item numbers and an update on the RACP curriculum review. Trainees will also be invited to attend the session.
The next meeting of the AChAM Committee will take place on Thursday 9 June 2016 via teleconference.
