AFPHM Trainee Committee end-of-year communiqué 2020

This is the first communiqué I have had the pleasure of writing to the AFPHM trainee cohort and I would like to start by thanking you all for your varied contributions to the challenges presented in 2020. Personally, I have spent most of the year situated in the Victorian department COVID-19 response and while it has not been without its hurdles, it has been such a pleasure to meet so many trainees as they have rotated through the department.

We haven't had the usual opportunities to meet as a broader trainee cohort like we would have in previous years at National Training Days and other gatherings. But it has been a pleasure to see trainees connected in different ways through WhatsApp groups, webinars and other platforms.

The holiday period is fast approaching and while not all of you will have the opportunity to take an extended break, I do hope you take a moment to reflect on the year that has passed and connect with loved ones near and far.

The AFPHM Trainee Committee will publish a communiqué following every committee meeting. Alongside the regular AFPHM bulletin, we hope you find it a useful way to stay abreast of latest updates and keep us accountable.

AFPHM trainee events

Thank you to our speakers and all who participated in the recent National Training Day webinars that were held on 19 November and 1 December respectively. These sessions were recorded and should be up on the RACP YouTube playlist shortly.

The monthly webinars have also started again with the last held on 18 November. The Trainee Committee will be organising informal online catch-ups after these webinars. Look out for invitations to both.

Your jurisdictional trainee representative or regional committee may also be organising sessions. Check in with your representative to make sure you are on all relevant mailing lists.

AFPHM Trainee Committee work plan

The previous AFPHM Trainee Committee work plan is due for a refresh. These work plans have generally mapped discrete deliverable objectives across the domains of overall educational experience, training, assessment, supervision and selection. The refresh of this work plan will be informed by the findings from the trainee survey.

Learning Contracts, reports and assessments

The Committee is aware that COVID-19 has presented challenges to trainee capacity to develop and submit their Learning Contracts and Learning Contract Reports, as well as delays in their assessment. There is ongoing work with relevant Faculty committees to support ongoing flexibility in submission requirements, for example extension in deadlines as well as streamlining of assessment.

The College is looking to engage a part-time Learning Contracts Advisor with interviews for this position currently underway.

Exams

It has been an incredibly stressful year for those thinking about the Oral Examination. The replacement exam for 2020 is being held in March 2021 by video conference. Applications for the October 2021 exam will open in May 2021. There is still further information to come regarding the March 2021 exam. The Committee is working with the Faculty and the College Trainees' Committee to ensure that exam requirements are consistent and equitable.

AFPHM trainee survey

Many of you will have contributed to an AFPHM trainee survey in the past year. This survey was conducted to capture the specific thoughts and experiences of the trainee cohort. While AFPHM trainees do participate in broader RACP trainee surveys, information specific to AFPHM is difficult to extract. The Committee will be working to release the survey findings as well as instituting a process to deliver a yearly survey.

RACP Congress 2021 abstract submission

There will be a special AFPHM proffered papers session that will be conducted virtually at the RACP Congress 2021. This is a wonderful opportunity to present an oral abstract to your peers. The deadline for abstracts to be submitted for consideration has been extended to 12 January 2021. Those wishing to submit or find out further details should visit the RACP Congress 2021 website.

Committee membership

We are here to support you. Visit the AFPHM Trainee Committee webpage for a full list of committee members and their positions. To be place in contact with any committee member, contact the Faculty Office at afphm@racp.edu.au

Meeting dates have now been finalised for 2021. We welcome you all to reach out to your jurisdictional representatives and advise of any issues you would like raised.
