Welcome to the first communiqué for the AFPHM Trainee Committee. Read the highlights of key issues discussed as part of the 03-2019 AFPHM Trainee Committee meeting, held on 22 July 2019.
AFPHM Trainee Committee Workplan 2019-2020
The Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM) Trainee Committee have developed a 2019 to 2020 workplan. This details the goals that the Committee are working towards with other Faculty Committees to improve the overall education experience for AFPHM trainees, through training, assessment, supervision and selection.
Improved Communication Channels
The AFPHM Trainee Committee have been advocating for better communication channels so trainees can easily contact each other and their regional AFPHM Trainee Representative. The College is developing an Online Communities Platform for members to communicate with each other without going through the College. This project is in its initial stages and the AFPHM Trainee Committee have been active in providing feedback.
In the meantime, if any AFPHM trainees would like to contact their regional AFPHM Trainee Representative, please contact the Faculty Office via AFPHM@racp.edu.au so you can be put in touch with them.
The FTC wrote a letter to the AFPHM president, expressing concern about the effect of changes to the Specialist Training Program (STP) on AFPHM trainees. The STP is a federally-funded initiative designed to provide training in settings outside traditional metropolitan teaching hospitals. The STP is increasing its focus on rural or private settings, which some current AFPHM STP places may not fulfil.
The outcome so far is that currently funded positions will be funded in 2020. After that, some AFPHM STP positions will be defunded. However after 2020, other public health positions may be funded, and the RACP has advised that they are aiming for the number of AFPHM STP positions nationally to remain stable.
National Training Days
Following advocacy by the Committee, the 2019 AFPHM National Training Days were recorded for the first time and are now available online.
The AFPHM Training Committee have commenced planning for the 2020 AFPHM National Training Days. All AFPHM Trainees are encouraged to contact their AFPHM Trainee Representative or the Faculty Office with any topic/speaker suggestions for next year’s event.
The AFPHM Trainee Committee have requested that the AFPHM Webinars be held on different days of the week, so that trainees who are unable to attend the time slot on Tuesday afternoons have another opportunity to attend.
Calendar invitations will be attached to the reminder webinar emails sent to all AFPHM trainees, so that trainees can save these to their calendars. A Webinar Evaluation Survey will be sent to all AFPHM trainees for completion at the end of 2019.
AFPHM Trainee Committee Membership
The AFPHM Trainee Committee members are keen to further support all AFPHM trainees. Please feel free to contact the Faculty Office if you would like to be put in contact with any of these members.
Finally, the Committee will soon be conducting a survey of AFPHM trainees, to help understand trainees priorities. Please keep an eye out for it.
Next meeting: Monday 18 November 2019.
