AFRM Council Communiqué August 2020

Read the highlights of the key topics discussed at the 03-2020 AFRM Council meeting, held on Friday 21 August 2020.

General matters

The AFRM Council would like to establish formal links with the Faculty Education Committee, the AFRM Research Working Group, the RMSANZ Scientific Committee and AROC through the creation of an academic position. The AFRM Research Working Group and RMSANZ would be consulted and then approval would be sought from the RACP Board to create the position.

The Council Members discussed the AFRM Work Plan 2021-2022 and agreed that a strategic direction was required for the Faculty Education Committee to move forward. A brief will be prepared for discussion at the AFRM Executive Committee.

Faculty Policy and Advocacy Committee

The Faculty Policy and Advocacy Committee (FPAC) advised that the Stem Cell Therapy for Children with Cerebral Palsy Working Party and the Bariatric Rehabilitation Working Party are now active. Additionally, the submission to the Disability Royal Commission was being finalised.

The FPAC is exploring opportunities for rehabilitation physicians to be involved in conversations in the COVID-19 pandemic space, specifically in relation to people living with long-term side effects of the virus.

Faculty Education Committee

The Faculty Education Committee (FEC) advised that they have been planning for exam changes and contingency plans. In particular, the FEC are working towards an online exam. Another option would include local invigilators if the COVID-19 pandemic prevents face-to-face meetings. The FEC is aiming to communicate these updates to trainees in September 2020.

Lastly, the Computer-Based Training Project was discussed and it was confirmed that the project suppliers and budgets had been approved by the RACP Board. Mock exam plans have been scheduled for March 2021 and several contingencies around venues have been considered to accommodate social distancing regulations. Back up plans have also been developed in case a technical issue arises on the exam day, including paper-based exam delivery if required.

The FEC has received approval from the College Education Committee to resume site accreditation.

AFRM Trainee Committee

The AFRM Trainee Committee had not met since the last Council meeting.
