AFRM Council Communiqué March 2020

Read the highlights of the key topics discussed at the 01-2020 AFRM Council meeting, held on Friday 27 March 2020.


General matters

AFRM Council Members expressed concern about of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on AFRM trainees. Council Members are committed to work closely with the RACP and the various expert groups to mitigate these impacts. In particular, Council Members acknowledged the unique position of AFRM trainees due to the requirement to take exit exams and recommended for a decision to be made about 2020 exams and communicated soon. AFRM Council resolved to write a letter to the CEC regarding the AFRM exams in 2020.

The AFRM Council:

  • approved Professor Tim Geraghty’s nomination to the Fellowship Council
  • approved the AFRM Clinical Exam date change in 2021 in response to Registrar Recruitment Process issues experienced in 2019
  • continues to seek a representative for the AFRM Congress Lead for the RACP Congress 2021-2022
  • discussed the upcoming RACP elections to ensure vacancies would be minimised

Faculty Policy and Advocacy Committee

The Faculty Policy and Advocacy Committee advised that the Stem Cell Therapy for Children with Cerebral Palsy Working Party and the Bariatric Rehabilitation Working Party were in the process of being established. Additionally, the Multi-Resistant Organisms in Rehabilitation Units Working Party had its first meeting in November 2019.

The RACP is working with the NDIS Reference Group to prepare a submission to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

Two AFRM representatives were required for the Clinical Indicators Working Group. It was agreed who should be invited to be part of this Working Group.

Faculty Education Committee

The Curricula Renewal Project has not been able to make progress due to the Working Group being unable to meet up.

Two advisory groups have been established to discuss postponement of 2020 exams and to develop contingency plans. Further, a training operations group has been established to look at the issues regarding progression through training.

AFRM Trainee Committee

The main focus of the AFRM Trainee Committee is the Annual Trainee Meeting which is planned for October 2020. The organising committee is looking for speakers who would like to participate in the event.
