Northern Territory - December 2022
A message from your Regional Committee Chair
Hello, I hope you are all managing to remain cool and hydrated in the build-up to the end of the year. The mangoes in Katherine are delicious, but I think I am now ready for some storms.
I hope you have had the opportunity to virtually attend the Saturday education sessions that were organised by Dr Rosalie Schultz and Dr Suddy Venkatesan, members of the Northern Territory Regional Committee. The first session was Climate change and NT workforce sustainability and the second was Cross-cultural communication. The sessions were excellent. Recordings can be found here and I encourage you to watch them. A third session on the NT sepsis pathways and three-year evaluation of the NT alcohol minimum unit price has been postponed until February 2023.
Advocacy work continues to be included in the Committee’s workplan. Recognising the unique training opportunities in the Northern Territory and enhancing access to these opportunities to encourage the attraction and retention of trainees, is regularly discussed by the Committee. We know some of the other colleges have already made moves to look at their accreditation processes and other network opportunities to better support rural training in Australia. The RACP is looking at what has been successful in these colleges, and what we can replicate in our College and locally within the NT.
I am cautiously optimistic that the NT government has committed to an increase in the age of criminal responsibility to 12 years, however, the College continues to advocate for the age to be raised to 14 in line with expert opinion. I hope the NT government will continue to engage with us on this topic.
The Northern Territory Trainees' Committee is still looking for additional membership. If you are a trainee with an interest in representing and advocating for your colleagues, I would encourage you to get in touch with the Committee to express your interest via RACPNT@racp.edu.au.

An update from your Regional Trainees' Committee
The Northern Territory Trainees’ Committee (NTTC) has just held its final meeting of the year. Key areas of focus in 2022 have been on improving educational resources and opportunities across the NT for all trainees. This includes advocating for increased sharing of virtual resources across training sites in the NT, and allotment of protected teaching time.
The Committee is always looking to recruit new members and encourage any trainees that will be living in the NT in 2023 to please consider joining our team. Further, we are looking to appoint both new adult and paediatric Co-Chairs for next year. As a Committee Member you have the opportunity advocate for your fellow trainees and to help shape the training experience for all. As Co-Chairs, there is opportunity to sit on the NT Regional Committee as well as the College Trainees Committee (CTC).
The NTTC will meet again in early 2023.
Dr Johanna Moraes
Northern Territory Trainees' Committee Co-Chair
