College Trainees' Committee communiqué August 2018

The following Communiqué highlights the key topics discussed as part of the 03-2018 College Trainees' Committee meeting, held on Friday 31 August 2018.

CTC Executive Committee and Trainee Representation on College Bodies

The CTC endorsed the establishment of a new Executive Committee to exercise delegated authority in managing the business and interests of the CTC. The CTC Executive Committee will comprise of the Chair and Deputy Chairs.

The Committee reviewed and endorsed applications for the following trainee representatives on other College Bodies:

  • Dr Davina Buntsma as the Advanced Trainee Representative on the College Education Committee
  • Dr Edward Cliff as the Basic Trainee Representative on the Adult Medicine Division Council
  • Dr Elizabeth Keeling and Dr Daina Rudaks as the Trainee Representatives on the Paediatrics and Child Health Division Council

Workforce Data Collection

The CTC was advised that our College is undertaking a project to collect member data through a survey that will assist in College strategic planning. The Committee supported this initiative and saw it as beneficial to better understand our membership and ensure our College continues to provide valuable services to Fellows and trainees.

The Committee endorsed the collection of workforce data to be offered on an opt-out basis for members when paying College subscriptions.

Basic Training Learning, Teaching and Assessment Program Update

The Committee received a presentation on the Basic Training Learning, Teaching and Assessment programs including the two proposed implementation approaches for the Basic Training Curricula. The CTC was requested to provide feedback on their preferred implementation approach for the College Education Committee’s (CEC) consideration.

Our College held consultation forums in Sydney and Auckland during September to discuss the Basic Training, Learning and Assessment Program and will be planning how to best support implementation locally for the future.

Once the CEC identify a preferred approach for the Basic Training Curricula, a comprehensive implementation plan will be developed.

Training Fees Information Update

The Committee was presented with a draft infographic to explain how trainee fees are being expended in response to requests to provide more transparency regarding trainee fees. The CTC reviewed the infographic and provided feedback to ensure the information was relevant and appropriately presented.

Further adjustments will be made to improve the infographic to reflect the feedback received from the Committee. It is anticipated that this document will be released to the wider trainee cohort once finalised and endorsed by the Committee.

College Trainees’ Committee Work Plan 2019-2020

The CTC took some time during their meeting to review the current work plan and discuss the development of the 2019-2020 work plan. The work plan provides an overview of the Committee’s strategic initiatives and priorities for the next twelve to eighteen months.

It was pleasing to see representatives from all jurisdictions present at our meeting and involved in these discussions, ensuring the CTC is representing the interests of all College trainees. A draft work plan will be developed from these discussions that will be sent to the Board for approval.

Trainees’ Day 2019

The Committee discussed Trainees’ Day 2019 in New Zealand (NZ) and considered future Trainees’ Day events. It was agreed that Trainees’ Day 2019 is to be organised by the NZ Trainees’ Committee
