Cardiac Intensive Care, Victorian Heart Hospital 

As we celebrate our first year in operation, Monash Health’s flagship Victorian Heart Hospital is Australia’s first Intensive Cardiac Care Unit with cardiothoracic care, complex cardiac failure patients and nurse led ECMO service.  A newly built state-of-the-art 16 bed service delivering a modern model of excellence in care to complex cardiac patients supported by a team of highly skilled and talented critical care medical, nurses and multidisciplinary cardiac team.  

About the Role 

The Director of Intensive Care is a pivotal role with accountability for the clinical and operational performance of the Victorian Heart Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact in the delivery of cardiac care and a lasting impact on cardiovascular health. Fundamental to this role, is leading the Senior Medical Team by role modelling, inspiring and collaborating to drive excellence in the efficient coordination and management of the Heart Hospital’s Intensive Care Services as we grow, lead, and innovate. The ICU Director works in partnership with the cardiac ICU Nurse Manager to deliver a holistic, new model of care to support complex cardiac patients. Part of the Monash ICU leadership team, the ICU Director will also play an active role to assist the Service Director Intensive Care in co-ordinating and providing intensive care services across Monash Health’s ICU Program. Refer to Position Description for more information.

About You 

Foremost, you are a clear communicator able to partner with and engage effectively with all stakeholders to influence outcomes with patients and people are at the “heart” of what you do. Alongside a passion in cardiac health, your ability to provide an exemplary interdisciplinary clinical practice, facilitate clinical education and promote research to deliver patient-centred care excellence is second to none. To ensure your success in this role, you will have following demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge: 

  • Extensive clinical experience in managing complex, critically ill cardiology, and postcardiac surgery patients with advanced echocardiography skills are desirable 
  • Clinical expertise in mechanical circulatory support for the critically ill patient is required. 
  • Strong leadership capability fostering collaboration, engagement and a positive thriving culture 
  • Demonstrated ability to work at strategic level to drive strategic and clinical plans

Essential qualifications

  • Mandatory - Qualified as a medical practitioner with specialist qualifications and registration, or eligible for registration, as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia in the appropriate discipline.  
  • Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine. 
  • Significant recent relevant experience in intensive care services as a specialist in a major teaching hospital managing complex cardiology and post-cardiac surgery patients. 
  • Significant recent experience in initiating and managing extra-corporeal mechanical support  
  • Completion of Credentialing and Scope of Practice process prior to appointment and commencement with review on a regular basis. Applicants who are new to Monash Health will be required to enter into an Employment Agreement before commencement
