Overview

New South Wales Basic Physician Training (BPT) is run collaboratively by:

• NSW Ministry of Health
• Health Education and Training Institute (HETI)
• The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP)
• Local Health Districts and specialty networks

If you're considering applying to more than one network, you'll need to make a separate application for each BPT Network position advertised.

If you meet the eligibility and selection criteria, you can apply during the Annual Medical Recruitment campaign period (July to October).

Eligibility

To be eligible for Basic Physician Training in NSW you need:

• a medical degree accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC)
• a current general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia
• successful completion of at least 2 years full-time post-graduate clinical experience by the start of the contract period
• a valid Working with Children Check
• cleared National Police Check
• current Advanced Life Support Level 2 (ALS2) certification
• compliance with mandated occupational assessment, screening and vaccination requirements.

Apply

Eligible applicants can apply to join a BPT Network during their second (or subsequent) postgraduate training year (PGY2), during the Annual Medical Recruitment campaign period.

Selection into a BPT role in NSW is very competitive and the training program requires significant commitment. Ensure you are committed to a career in internal medicine as a Physician before applying.

Successful applicants are appointed a joint training and employment position in one of 11 networks with a training contract at the start of PGY3.

Applications generally open in July and close in August each year.

Position description and selection criteria

In NSW, all BPT Networks use a common position description and selection criteria. Each position advertised has details of a contact person for further enquiries.

It is crucial that your application responds to the selection criteria provided for the position you’re applying for.

The selection criteria is a set of measurable standards the selection panel uses to determine if you have the right mix of:

• skills
• knowledge
• qualifications
• experience

Selection

NSW Networks review all applications using a merit-based approach to shortlist applicants for the interview stage. Interview places are limited and it is very competitive.

Interviews are coordinated by each Network for the positions they offer. If you’re invited for an interview you’ll need to provide additional information to allow for pre-employment checks, including:

• Citizenship/Residency Status including proof of valid work rights
• National Police Criminal Record Check
• Health Declaration
• Referees – at least one referee for BPT must hold FRACP and one must be a current (or most recent) supervisor.

Your information will be collected via the JMO career portal and referee details will be collected via Harver (Outmatch), an external provider.

Preference matching

NSW uses a preference matching process for BPT position allocations.

Preference matching means successful applicants will only receive one offer of employment in a BPT role.

You must submit an application to each training network you would accept an offer of employment from. Once applications close you will receive an email with a link to rank your preferences. Panels cannot ask you to disclose your preference order. You can update your preference ranking up to midnight on the last interview day.
