Queensland Health oversees the Queensland Basic Paediatric Training Network.

Overview

In Queensland, approval of basic training is limited to medical officers that have been formally selected into the training network.

The network is a state-wide program designed to support Queensland trainees by providing:

• centralised, merit-based selection into basic training
• access to a range of RACP-accredited training hospitals offering a variety of clinical and procedural experiences
• surety that all RACP basic training requirements will be met within 3-years

If you're successful, you'll be appointed to a 3-year network place in one of 3 rotations and generally commencing in a 12-month Senior House Officer (SHO) temporary appointment with a defined group of metropolitan and regional RACP accredited training hospitals.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the basic training program, you must:

• hold general registration with the Medical Board of Australia
• be eligible for registration with RACP
• be commencing your first or second year of basic paediatric training in 2024

You’re assessed on your ability to demonstrate the key attributes within the context of the responsibilities described in the role descriptions for a Medical Registrar and/or a Senior House Officer (as published on the network webpage).

Centralised selection and preferences

The selection and allocation process in Queensland is centralised. Suitability and ranking for a network position is assessed through 5 essential components:

1. Referee Reports
2. Clinical experience (including medical experience and regional experience)
3. Curriculum vitae (CV) and RMO application
4. Short statement responses
5. Interview

You'll only submit one application and nominate (in order of preference) the rotation(s) at which you're hoping to secure a position. In Section 10, you must nominate your first preference with the:

• Facility: College/Pathway/Network determined
• Position: Registrar
• Speciality: Paediatrics
• Sub-specialty: Basic Paediatric Training

If you're not selected to join the network, preferences 2 to 5 are used to maximise your chances of securing an alternate position.

Employment contracts

The network provides written advice regarding the selection process outcome. Allocation occurs after selection. Following the allocation process, you'll receive appointment letters (employment contracts) outlining the position level and employment duration.

Apply

If you're a medical officer planning to undertake your first or second year of basic paediatric training in Queensland, you must apply to join the network. Queensland Health advertises positions for the following clinical year via an annual, statewide Resident Medical Officer (RMO) and Registrar Campaign.

Applying via the RMO Campaign allows you to apply for both the network and employment with individual RACP-accredited hospitals.

If you're selected into the network, you'll be allocated to a training hospital. They provide you with an employment contract and then you can register with the RACP by the deadline at the end of February.

Selection

If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited to participate in an interview. You’ll be provided with the details of the interview date, time and format.

Prepare for the selection process

In your application and at the interview, you’ll be asked a series of questions related to these key attributes:

• commitment to pursuing a career as a paediatrician
• clinical skills, knowledge and personal attributes consistent with those required for appointment as a first/foundation year basic paediatric trainee at PGY3 or above
• ability to work in a complex clinical environment
• excellent verbal and written culturally appropriate communication skills
• leadership, management, and teamwork
• judgement, and problem-solving skills
• participation in teaching, ability to plan and manage their learning in a clinical environment
• professional and ethical behaviour in clinical and training environment
• commitment to Queensland
• exposure to regional and rural clinical experience (desirable)

Selection to the network

If you’re successful in the network selection process, you can join the basic paediatric training program.

Training capacity is determined annually. You'll be offered a 3-year pathway in merit ranked order and further annual employment contracts to cover the remaining 2 years of your basic paediatric training (subject to satisfactory ongoing performance).
