Evolve is a flagship initiative led by RACP members to drive high-value, high-quality care in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

About Evolve

Evolve aims to reduce low-value care by supporting physicians to be leaders in changing clinical behaviour for better patient care, make better decisions, and make better use of resources.

Evolve works with specialties to identify their Top-5 clinical practices that are considered low-value. Low-value care is clinical practices that, in particular circumstances, may:

  • be overused
  • provide little or no benefit
  • cause unnecessary harm.

Evolve’s main objective of reducing low-value care practices also reduces related emissions and waste. This in turn helps to reduce future climate change impacts on patient health and contributes to building stronger more climate resilient healthcare systems.

Evolve AI webinar series

Artificial intelligence webinar series

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way we deliver care. To help you keep updated with what AI has to offer, RACP Evolve is launching a new six-part artificial intelligence webinar series for physicians, hosted by Professor Ian Scott.

AI offers enormous potential for delivering high-value, patient-centred care when professionals understand how to use it responsibly, identify its limitations and mitigate risks.

In this webinar series, we'll explore which AI applications are ready for adoption and how you can use it to enhance patient-centred care. You will also find out about how AI can support your professional wellbeing and the sustainability of our healthcare systems.

Evolve in the news

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion has released Evolve clinical case studies on the safe management of iron deficiency anaemia and fresh frozen plasma transfusion.

Diana is a 35-year-old non-pregnant patient presenting with fatigue and dyspnoea due to iron deficiency. Diana’s case reminds physicians not to use red cell transfusion as the first-line treatment in patients with chronic iron deficiency or pre-operative patients with iron deficiency. In physiologically compensated patients, transfusion carries unnecessary risks and fails to replenish deficient iron stores.

Simon is a 58-year-old patient presenting with increasing abdominal distension, nausea and fatigue. He is a smoker with hypertension, type 2 diabetes and liver cirrhosis. His radiologist considers best practice prior to Simon’s ascitic tap procedure. This reminds physicians to not transfuse standard doses of fresh frozen plasma to correct a mildly elevated (<1.8) international normalised ratio prior to a procedure as there is no evidence that this will prevent bleeding. Administering vitamin K before Simon’s procedure is recommended.

Evolve Top-5 recommendations

Recommendations on low-value practices are developed through a rigorous, peer-reviewed process led by clinical experts, informed by evidence and guided by consultation and enable physicians to:

  • safely and responsibly phase out low-value tests, treatments and procedures, where appropriate
  • enhance the safety and quality of healthcare
  • provide high-value care to patients based on evidence and expertise
  • influence the best use of health resources, reducing wasted expenditure and the carbon footprint of the healthcare system.
