Nominating eligible supervisors
From mid-2023, you’re required to nominate eligible supervisors who meet the supervision requirements of the training program.
You can find a list of eligible supervisors:
- in the supervision section of your online registration form
- on MyRACP
The MyRACP list is not available for post-Fellowship trainees. Post-Fellowship trainees can check the list in their online registration form or contact us to confirm supervisor eligibility.
You're responsible for organising all necessary documentation for submission by the deadline. We recommend that you keep a copy of your application for future reference.
See program key dates for trainees and supervisors.
Late applications
Late applications will be considered up to 1 month after the deadline.
Applications received 1 month after the deadline won’t be considered unless exceptional circumstances can be demonstrated in line with the Special Considerations for Assessment Policy.
Late applications may incur a fee.
Late fees won't apply if supervisor approval is pending after the deadline.
Fees
The standard annual membership fees apply.

About your training position
Core training must be undertaken at accredited settings.
Once you have secured a training position, you must prospectively apply for approval as per the Progression Through Training Policy.
The College is not involved in the recruitment and selection of trainees. Our role is to set and monitor standards for selection and provide advice to settings and their selection committees.
Training approval and certification
Approval of training periods will be determined by the Advanced Training Committee (ATC) in Geriatric Medicine and the Aotearoa New Zealand Advanced Training Subcommittee (ATS) in Geriatric Medicine. To be approved, your individual training program must be consistent with the training requirements and appropriate for the stage in training.
Upon completion of each rotation or calendar year of training, the ATC/ATS will review your progress according to the training requirements. If all requirements of training have been satisfactorily completed, the ATC/ATS will certify that period of training.
Dual training
Your overall training plan must support the breadth of experience required by a geriatrician. Your second specialty must be relevant to the practice of geriatric medicine.
The ATC/ATS in Geriatric Medicine can prospectively approve up to 12 months of a second specialty towards Advanced Training in Geriatric Medicine. The ATC/ATS can also make individual recommendations for achieving this goal.
If you choose a second specialty that doesn’t have direct relevance to geriatric medicine, you will be required to complete 36 months of approved training in geriatric medicine.
A maximum of 6 months in other specialty training may be counted as core geriatric medicine training. For example, a palliative medicine Advanced Trainee can count a maximum of 6 months towards their core training in the Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training Program.
We strongly recommend you plan your training as early as possible to map out the training requirements of both programs.
If you need further guidance, contact us.
Exceeding accreditation conditions
Individual settings are accredited for a maximum period of training based on standard criteria. The ATC/ATS strongly recommend trainees complete their Advanced Training at more than 1 training setting (hospital or health service).
This requirement may cause hardship for some trainees. The ATC/ATS will consider individual applications for Approval of Training exceeding a setting’s accreditation that are soundly based on educational reasons. You’ll be required to provide evidence that the proposed training:
- won’t be compromised in comparison to moving to another setting
- won’t be a duplication of a rotation that is already certified
- increases the breadth and depth of your training
Applications for Prospective Approval of Training are not guaranteed to automatic acceptance by the ATC/ATS.
To avoid disruption to your training, you must submit your Application for Prospective Approval of Training when inconsistent with a setting’s accreditation at least 3 months prior to the commencement of the rotation.
Training variations
See variations in training for processes covering dual, joint, conjoint and post-Fellowship training.
See flexible training options for information on part-time training, interruptions to training, withdrawing from training and time limits.
Rotation or supervision changes
Changes to your rotation require you to re-submit an application form (if online registration is closed) to your ATC/ATS as soon as possible. This includes any changes to sites, dates of rotations and flexible training arrangements.
Change to your supervision must be notified as soon as possible by submitting a supervisor details amendment form (DOC).
Some changes may require a review of the approval decision and can affect the certification of your training.
