Moving to Advanced Training

Eligibility

From 2017, trainees must apply to commence Advanced Training (Divisions) within 5 years of the completion of Basic Training. The Flexible Training Policy has details.

You’re eligible to apply for Advanced Training if you have:

passed your Divisional Written and Clinical Examinations
satisfactorily completed 36 months of certified Basic Training
satisfactorily completed the mandatory (core) requirements of the Basic Training Program, as outlined in the Divisional Basic Training Program Requirements Handbook
submitted a certified copy of the appropriate Advanced Life Support course completion

If you’re in your final year of Basic Training, ensure:

you submit all required PREP tools in accordance with your training program requirements
your supervisor submits your final Supervisor's Report. Speak with your Educational Supervisor or Director of Physician/Paediatric Education to ensure that it is submitted on time

Applying

The process and due dates for applying for Advanced Training depends on the Advanced Training Program you choose. Before applying, you’ll need to secure an Advanced Training position in an accredited training site.

Final Year Basic Trainees	should apply for AT by 15 Feb for positions starting in Feb of the same year.	should apply for AT by 15 Dec for positions starting in Jan/Feb.
Final Year Basic Trainees	Example: if you have completed all BT requirements by January 2022 and are starting AT in February 2022, please ensure you have submitted, and your AT supervisor has approved your application by 15 February 2022.
Continuing Basic Trainees*	should apply for AT by 31 Aug, for positions starting in Jul/Aug of the same year OR should apply for AT by 15 Feb, for positions starting in Feb of that year	should apply for AT by 30 Jun, for positions starting in Jul/Aug of the same year OR should apply for AT by 15 Dec, for positions starting in Jan/Feb
Continuing Basic Trainees*	Example 1: if you have completed all BT requirements by May/June 2022 and are starting AT in July/August 2022, please ensure you have submitted, and your AT supervisor has approved your application by 30 June 2022 (AoNZ) and 31 August 2022 (AU) Example 2: if you have completed all BT requirements by May/June 2022 (or prior) and are starting AT in February 2023, please ensure you have submitted, and your AT supervisor has approved your application by 15 February 2023
*Continuing Basic Trainees are those who have completed the time-based training requirements but have other requirements, such as examinations, to complete before progressing to Advanced Training.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You can’t apply for RPL for any training completed before passing your Divisional Clinical Exam (DCE) and completing all requirements of Basic Training.

Rotations undertaken between 1 Aug and the date you attempted and passed the DCE is not considered RPL, provided you have prospectively applied for AT as per the published deadlines. Once DCE results are received, the relevant Advanced Training Committee (ATC) will assess your application and confirm AT status.

COVID-19 changes

We understand that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is affecting states variously. In keeping with the education and training principles trainees unable to complete required assessments or training due to the affect of the pandemic are asked to advise their Training Committee as soon as possible.

The provisional Advanced Training (pAT) pathway was available to 2020 DCE candidates only and expired once the 2020 DCE was delivered. For 2021 DCE candidates in states where exam delivery was significantly impacted by COVID-19 the College put in place processes to support these trainees. This was completed in February and March 2022 with the completion of the 2021 DCE short cases for PCH candidates.
