Provisional Advanced Training

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Divisional Clinical Examination (DCE) was postponed until later in 2020. A provisional Advanced Training (pAT) progression pathway was available to help trainees continue with training.

This information is only relevant to 2020 and 2021 DCE candidates. Candidates for the upcoming DCE can find out more on the Moving to Advanced Training page.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the 2021 exam was successfully delivered in the traditional face-to-face format as planned in May 2021.

In Australia, with the effect of the pandemic varying across time and place in Australia, the 2021 Divisional Clinical Exam (DCE) was delivered in the following formats with flexibility in mind.

  • Applications will be considered by the relevant ATC in Mar/Apr 2022 as per usual.
Deferred the 2021 DCE short case to 2022:
  • These trainees may apply for AT in Feb 2022.
  • Will be eligible for approval of up to 12 months from Feb 2022.
  • Conditional on sitting and passing the 2022 DCE.
  • 2021 DCE candidates who chose to not attempt their DCE in 2022 will revert to continuing basic training.

These trainees may apply for AT in Aug 2021:

  • will be eligible for approval of up to 18 months from Aug 2021.
  • conditional on sitting and passing the 2021 DCE in Feb/Mar 2022.
  • applications will be considered by the relevant ATC in Mar/Apr 2022 as per usual.

Deferred the 2021 DCE Short Case to 2022:

These trainees may apply for AT in Aug 2021:

  • will be eligible for approval of up to 18 months from Aug 2021.
  • conditional on sitting and passing the 2022 DCE.
  • 2021 DCE candidates who chose to not attempt their DCE in 2022 will revert to Continuing Basic Training.

Applying for Advanced Training (Adult and Paediatrics)

Should apply for AT by 15 Feb 2022, for positions starting in Feb 2022.

Paediatrics trainees should also apply, even if your 2021 DCE Short Case is scheduled for Feb/Mar 2022

Once DCE results are received, the relevant Advanced Training Committee (ATC) will confirm AT status.

Continuing Basic Trainees*

Should have applied for AT by 30 Sept 2021, for positions starting in Aug 2021

Should have applied for AT by 15 Feb 2022, for positions starting in Feb 2022

Paediatrics trainees should apply, even if your 2021 DCE Short Case is scheduled for Feb/Mar 2022

Once DCE results are received, the relevant Advanced Training Committee (ATC) will confirm AT status.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL will not be accepted for any pAT rotations or training undertaken prior to completing the DCE.

*Continuing Basic Trainees are those who have completed the time-based training requirements but have other requirements, such as examinations, to complete before progressing to Advanced Training.

Eligibility requirements

Trainees planning to sit the 2020 DCE, could apply for Provisional Advanced Training (pAT) for either later in 2020 or in early 2021 if they: 

  • completed all other Basic Training (BT) requirements, including passing the Divisional Written Examination

  • secured an AT position that starts after the date you would have sat the clinical exam in 2020 (this position must be in an accredited AT setting, approved by the relevant AT Committee)

  • plan to sit the rescheduled 2020 DCE in late 2020/early 2021.

For Basic Trainees currently on the Training Support Pathway:

  • all of the above conditions must be met

  • your current supervising committee must recommend advancing to provisional AT.
