My first meeting with Jack Meehan was in 1939 at St Vincent's Hospital outpatients department where Jack was an assistant physician. I was a student at this time and I will remember the kindness and consideration he showed to students and patients alike. Jack was a very good teacher and always achieved his point with a few well chosen words.
Jack Meehan who graduated in medicine and surgery at St Vincent's Hospital in 1929, carried on a very busy general practice during the war years and during these trying years he managed to study and obtain his Doctorate of Medicine and become a member of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians on 26 September 1941. He later was made a fellow of the College in 1978. Jack Meehan conducted an excellent general practice; he was a commonwealth medical referee to the Social Service Department, also he was a medical officer to St Joseph's Foundling Home.
Of all the good things that Jack Meehan did the greatest was to court and marry the lovely and beautiful Ellen Manniche who was a nursing sister at St Vincent's Hospital. Ellen and Jack had a great marriage. They were blessed with four sons and two daughters. Peter Meehan is a general practitioner in Malvern. The Meehan family lived at the medical practice in Prahran and spent many a happy holiday at Point Lonsdale. These annual trips were a highlight in Jack's life.
Jack was a keen sportsman. He loved his tennis and played regularly at the home of Dr Frank Niall (

), included in the tennis were Dr Desmond Niall and Dr Kevin Rush. In the later part of his life Jack turned to golf and he excelled in this difficult sport. Jack's death has left a great gap in his family's life but I am sure they will always be justly proud of him.
