Born in Melbourne he was educated at Carlton College before studying medicine at the University of Melbourne. During the First World War he was RMO of the 16th Battalion, AIF and later captain in the AHMC Reserve. Left with minimal hearing as a result of injury sustained in the trenches in France he did further study in London before returning to Australia. On his return he married and had three children, his only son being killed in the Air Force in 1943. He practised in Merbein, Victoria, for fifty-eight years and during that time he was inpatients surgeon at the Mildura Base Hospital from 1930 to 1965, and consulting surgeon from 1965 to 1977.
