The Monkeypox (MPX) virus infection is being carefully monitored by the Australian Government Department of Health (the Department) as it unfolds in Australia. MPX is a disease caused by Monkeypox virus (MPXV), with symptoms like those seen previously with smallpox.

Although MPX is endemic to parts of Africa, the recent outbreak has been detected in regions including Australia that are not endemic for MPX.

The Department will be updating the below alert and information with the latest medical advice and official reports.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI)’s guidance on the use of smallpox vaccine for protection against MPX virus infection is also available on the Australian Government Department of Health's website.
