2025 CPD Framework

For 2025, the CPD Framework has undergone some important refinements. These modifications are a consequence of regulatory changes made by the Medical Board of Australia and the Medical Council of New Zealand aimed at strengthening the quality of healthcare.

Watch experts Professor Martin Veysey and Dr Catherine D’Souza explain the Framework updates and discuss how these modifications will enhance your professional development.

In addition to cultural safety which incorporates addressing health inequities, CPD participants will also need to embed ethics and professional behaviour in CPD activities.

From 2025, CPD participants are required to complete and record a minimum of 2 activities on cultural safety including addressing health inequities, and 2 activities on ethics and professional behaviour annually.

More information and guidance on how to embed these domains into CPD activities and the types of activities you can complete can be found in the MyCPD Handbook

The MyCPD program will continue to follow the calendar year (1 January to 31 December) with records due 31 March the following year. For example, activities completed in 2025 must be recorded in MyCPD by 31 March 2026.

Your 50 hours will need to include:

  • A minimum of 12.5 hours of activities in Category 1 - Educational Activities.

These are traditional continuing medical education (CME) activities like conferences, reading journal articles or completing online learning modules.

  • A minimum of 25 hours of activities across Category 2 - Reviewing Performance and Category 3 - Measuring Outcomes.

  • Category 2 involves feedback from others on clinical and professional practice, such as peer review of records, patient feedback or multi-source feedback.

Category 3 involves measurement of health outcomes and might include an audit of standards or guidelines, practice against relevant EVOLVE recommendations, or incident reporting/monitoring. You must complete a minimum of 5 hours of activities in each of these categories and can decide the best mix to suit your practice.

This might mean you complete 5 hours of activities in category 2 and 20 hours in category 3. Or you could complete 15 hours of activities in category 2 and 10 hours in category 3.

  • It's expected that the 2 mandatory activities, professional development plan and annual conversation will enable you to meet the minimum requirement for category 2.

  • A minimum of 2 activities that involve cultural safety and addressing health inequities, and 2 activities incorporating ethics and professional behaviour are required annually. These activities can be completed in either categories 1, 2 or 3.

  • The remaining 12.5 hours can be completed across any of the categories.
