Curricula Renewal

Our Basic Training curricula are evolving in keeping with the healthcare environment, ever-changing medical education and international best practice.

The new Basic Training program will be a hybrid time- and competency-based training program. There is a minimum requirement for trainees to complete three years of full-time equivalent clinical experience

Basic Training:

  • contributes to the development of a workforce of physicians who provide safe, high-quality care to meet the needs of the community
  • builds on trainees’ existing knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop competence and confidence, and professional qualities
  • ensures clinical exposure to a wide variety of patients and problems across medical specialties and settings
  • establishes a solid foundation for entry into Advanced Training and lifelong learning and practice as a physician
  • helps trainees make informed decisions about future career paths

2020 Divisional Written Examination

In 2020, the Divisional Written Examination will be blueprinted to the new Basic Training curricula standards providing trainees and their supervisors with clear guidance on the curriculum areas being covered by the examination.

Early adopter training settings

In 2020, the first four early adopter training settings will start implementing the new Basic Training Program.

Participating settings

  • Gold Coast University Hospital
  • The Townsville Hospital
  • Starship Children’s Hospital Auckland
  • Women’s and Children’s Hospital Adelaide

We’ll share updates on their progress and evaluation of the new program when available.

Members will continue to be consulted to ensure the best outcomes for trainees and workplace training.
