You're invited to join us for an all-day, online interactive session on resilience and wellbeing.

In this session, we'll delve into the vital aspects of resilience and wellbeing, exploring various key topics and tools to navigate and enhance both. It's tailored specifically for basic and advanced trainees in both adult medicine and paediatrics and child health. Dr Shalika Shetty will lead the discussion, joined by guest speaker Nickolas Yu.

Speakers

Dr Shalika Shetty

Dr Shetty is a general paediatrician who has had a long-standing interest in physician wellbeing both from her training in the UK as well as Australia.

Nickolas Yu

Nickolas is the Program Manager of Staff Wellness and Patient & Family-Centred Care at Sydney Local Health District. A leader in workplace wellbeing, he has driven large-scale implementation of mindfulness, compassion-based training, and coaching across NSW Health. He is also the founder of HumanKind Australia, which supports individuals in accessing tools for their own wellbeing.

Program

The meaning and outcomes of effective physician resilience
  • The cognitive, functional and neurobiological components of resilience as applied to doctors.
Vicarious stress in medicine
  • Awareness of how and when this arises, and the potential effects on physicians when it occurs.
  • Strategies to respond to the impact of vicarious stress, including experiential immersion and training with tools such as mindfulness.
Understanding ‘burnout’ in healthcare
  • How to identify the elements of burnout, whether in ourselves or those in our teams.
  • Personalising the approach to physician burnout and use of the most effective evidence-based approaches to address it.
Coaching
  • Strategies which enable valued coaching conversations to occur for both ourselves and our colleagues. This continues the conversation regarding physician resilience beyond the training day.

Learning outcomes

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the unique factors which impact a physician's wellbeing and resilience.
  • Identify the cognitive, functional and neurobiological components of resilience in doctors.
  • Recognise how vicarious stress can arise in medicine, its potential impact on physicians and how to respond when it occurs.
  • Understand the concept of burnout in healthcare and identify its elements.
  • Learn and implement strategies to create valued coaching conversations with colleagues.
