Child Protection Medical Update
Date:
27 Aug 2025 at 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Location:
Clinical Education Centre, Auckland City Hospital, Park Road, Auckland
Host:
Starship Children's Hospital
Across New Zealand and Australia, it's general paediatricians who care for most children presenting with concerns about possible child abuse or neglect. We're all time-poor.
This year, Starship is offering a 1-day child protection medical update for health and allied health professionals seeking accessible CPE in this area of practice.
The day will be led by Dr Lori Frasier, Professor of Pediatrics at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, past Helfer Society President, and current board member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN).
The program
-
08:00 – 09:00 – Multiple Fractures in Infancy: Distinguishing Non-Accidental Injury from Other Causes
This lecture will be given as part of the national "Paediatric Update" lecture series.
-
09:30 – 10:30 – Current Controversies in Abusive Head Trauma
This lecture will provide an up-to-the-minute perspective on controversies that continue to surround the diagnosis of AHT.
-
11:00 – 12:00 – Medical Child Abuse
Few situations are more demanding than this (often known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, Paediatric Condition Falsification, or Fabricated or Induced Illness). This session will provide tips and tricks to assist health professionals involved in such cases.
-
13:00 – 15:00 – Complex Cases
This session enables you to present your own cases for discussion and feedback from a panel of contributors. Cases can come from any sphere of child protection — neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or any other aspect where you would value peer review or believe the case offers useful lessons we could all learn from.
