Return to Training Pathway
The Return to Training Pathway (RTP) supports trainees who’ve been on an extended interruption of training for more than 24 continuous months.
The RTP is designed to be flexible and identify what support you might need during the first 6 months back in training. It provides tools and a structure for regular check-ins between you and your supervisor(s).
Who the RTP is for
You can use the RTP if:
- you’ve been on an extended interruption of training (more than 24 continuous months), or
- you’ve been on your interruption between 12–24 continuous months and feel like you’d benefit from extra support
You may be exempt from the Return to Training Pathway if you’ve been undertaking relevant professional work during the interruption and have the support of your DPE/Supervisor.
What to expect during the RTP
The main tool in this pathway is the Return to Training Plan. In addition to the usual training program requirements, it supports you to:
- set out your goals
- track progress and achievements
- document discussions with your supervisor or DPE
You’ll develop this plan with your DPE (if you're in Basic Training) or your Supervisor (if you're in Advanced Training), and you’ll need to return the completed documents.
If you’re on the Training Support Pathway
If you were on Stage 2 or 3 of the Training Support Pathway (TSP) prior to your interruption of training, you won’t need to complete RTP documentation. Instead, you’ll continue to receive support via the TSP.
Starting the process
To access the RTP, contact your DPE/Supervisor or the Training Support Unit and they’ll guide you through the process.
