College calls for NSW Government intervention over junior doctor burnout

26 September 2022

The Royal Australasian College of Physicians is calling for urgent intervention from the NSW Government to address the resourcing crisis in the state’s healthcare system affecting the junior doctor workforce.

RACP President, Dr Jacqueline Small says “The reports today that junior doctors are extremely overworked and under supported is concerning, but sadly not surprising.

“There is a crisis in our healthcare system, and more urgent action is required from the federal and state governments on fixing this

“We have been raising concerns about this for years now.

“This is an issue across Australia – but the reports today about the severity of the crisis in NSW demands urgent action.

“The NSW Government must step up and take some responsibility for this crisis.

Chair of the RACP Trainees’ Committee Dr Hashim Abdeen says “The reports today of how burnt out and overworked junior doctors are in NSW should be making the State Government stop in its tracks.

“Junior doctors are bearing the brunt of the staffing crisis in our hospital system and it’s clear that things are now at breaking point.”

“We’re calling on State & Territory Health Departments to urgently address burnout for our doctors in training and to ensure that psychosocial safety is addressed for all healthcare workers.” Dr Abdeen said.
