Alcohol
Why is Alcohol a priority topic for the RACP?
Every day, physicians and paediatricians witness the harmful effects of alcohol on their patients, whether in addiction clinics, the emergency department, orthopaedic wards, rehabilitation centres, liver clinics or assessing the impacts of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders.
What is the College doing?
The RACP is advocating for serious and wide ranging reforms to address the health impacts of unsafe alcohol consumption.
The RACP had previously established the Alcohol Policy Working Party to undertake an extensive review of the latest evidence and consult widely across the College and with key stakeholders in order to produce an updated College position on the management of harms associated with alcohol. This process resulted in March 2016 in the release of the College’s updated Alcohol Policy, developed in collaboration with the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), which reflects the recent developments in scientific evidence, and recommends a range of policy and societal measures to reduce alcohol related harms, particularly relating to young people.
