Climate Change and Health Multi-College Advisory Committee

The Climate Change and Health Multi-College Advisory Committee (MCAC) brings together 14
specialist medical colleges to provide a forum for engagement and collaboration on climate
change and health policy and advocacy.

Together we contributed to the development of Australia’s National Health and Climate Strategy. Our March 2022 joint statement, called for the development of the Strategy to support stronger, healthier communities that can thrive in the face of climate change alongside ensuring healthcare systems build environmental sustainability.

Many of our recommendations are reflected in the Strategy including a commitment to a whole-of-government approach and Health in All Policies. The Strategy is an important first step towards improving the climate resilience of healthcare systems in Australia and promoting and protecting the health of populations.

Our August 2023 joint statement emphasised the need for full funding and effective implementation of the Strategy. We continue to advocate for Strategy implementation to be guided by First Nations knowledge and leadership, foster healthy and climate resilient communities, and equitably decarbonise healthcare.

The MCAC’s work builds on an expert report led by its predecessor – Climate Change and Australia's Healthcare Systems – A Review of Literature, Policy and Practice (PDF). The recommendations of this report underpin the Healthy Climate Future Campaign which is endorsed by 14 medical colleges and supported by 14 specialty societies, representing over 100,000 doctors.
