Epilepsy is a common and serious neurological condition, affecting approximately 250,000 Australians of all ages. In recognition of its substantial global burden, the World Health Organization recently released the Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy. This aims to address gaps in providing care and services to people with epilepsy. These gaps exist even in high-income countries with universal healthcare, such as Australia.

This practical presentation will cover first seizure work-up, epilepsy diagnosis and management, and future directions to reduce the ‘gaps’ in epilepsy care delivery.

Dr Emma Foster is an early career academic neurologist at Alfred Health and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She specialises in first seizures, epilepsy, and headache medicine, and is developing expertise in health economics and outcomes research. Her work is published in leading clinical neurology journals, including The Lancet Neurology and JAMA Neurology, features on the American Academy of Neurology podcast series, and informs international clinical guidelines.

She is a committee member for the Epilepsy Society of Australia and the Australian and New Zealand Headache Society.
