Vocational registration

Overview

If you hold a postgraduate specialist medical qualification from overseas, you may be eligible to practise in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We work under the Te Kaunihera Rata o Aotearoa | Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), the regulatory authority which is responsible for granting medical registration. It protects the health and safety of the public by ensuring practitioners are competent and fit to practice.

During the application process, we work with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) as a Vocational Education Advisory Body (VEAB) to:

  • assess the equivalency of your qualifications, training, experience and continuing medical education (CME)/continuing professional development (CPD);
  • provide a recommendation to the MCNZ on your comparability against an Australasian-trained physician or paediatrician in the same specialty.

See our Policy on the assessment of OTPs (PDF).

The MCNZ makes the final decision on whether you are granted registration in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Use the MCNZ’s registration self-assessment tool to find which pathway to registration is right for you. Please contact the MCNZ directly with any enquiries regarding your application.
