Jameson Investigator Award

For research related to Indigenous health issues

The Jameson Investigator Award for research related to Indigenous health issues is presented to the best oral research presentation made at the Queensland Committee research presentation evening.

The Award is made possible by a generous bequest from Mrs Elsie Jameson.

The 2024 recipient was Dr Liana Neldner for the presentation: Age of hepatitis B e antigen loss in Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non—Indigenous residents of tropical Australia; implications for clinical care.

Dr Vikas Bhasker | 2025 recipient

Dr Vikas Bhasker is a Clinical Hepatology Research Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane. A graduate of James Cook University’s medical program in Far North Queensland, he has broad clinical experience across rural and regional Queensland, including work with First Nations communities, and has also contributed to health programs in the Pacific and East Africa.

His research focuses on population-level outcomes in cirrhosis and metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease. Vikas has presented his work nationally and internationally at the Australian Gastroenterology Week and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Liver Meeting.

He also holds a Master of Global Health from the University of New South Wales and will commence Advanced Training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2026, continuing his commitment to equitable liver health and medical education.

Eligibility

An applicant must be:

  • a registered Queensland member of the RACP, its divisions, faculties or chapters, and
  • a trainee, or
  • a Fellow who, at the time of giving their oral presentation, was admitted to Fellowship within the past 3 years

Applicants must submit and present work that they have made a significant contribution to the concept and execution.

Prize

The recipient of the Jameson Investigator Award for research related to Indigenous health will receive AUD$450 and a certificate.

Presentation

Selected applicants will give an oral presentation of their submission at the Queensland Committee research presentation evening held in person at the RACP Brisbane Office.

Presentations will run for approximately 12 minutes with three additional minutes for questions.

The 2025 presentation evening will take place on Wednesday 5 November 2025.

Selection criteria

  1. A judging panel, comprised of Queensland Committee Members, will review all submissions and select abstracts that meet the criteria and high standard expected for an oral presentation.

  2. Submissions and presentations will be assessed based on the following criteria:
    1. excellence of hypothesis
    2. methodology
    3. scientific merit
    4. potential impact and outcomes for the community and science
    5. oral presentation
    6. relevance to Indigenous health
  3. The judging panel reserves the right not to select a prize recipient if they find that no presentations meet the criteria and/or aren't of the high standard expected of an oral presentation.
