As part of its broader strategy on child health, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) has launched a position statement on ‘Early childhood: the Importance of the Early Years’ at this year’s Congress in Auckland.

The ‘Early childhood: the Importance of the Early Years’ position statement highlights policy priorities that are vital to improving early childhood development in Australia and New Zealand. It can assist policymakers and health professionals working with children and families with the development of local and national policies, programmes and interventions that focus on early child development to protect and promote healthy life-course trajectories. It further describes the services and the physical, psychosocial and social environment required to promote optimum infant and child development from conception through pregnancy and during the preschool years, as indicated by current research and experience.
