Ten years ago, we launched a podcast called Pomegranate Health, a podcast about the culture of medicine. In June, Pomegranate Health celebrated a decade of conversations shaping modern medicine.

This month, the team behind Pomegranate Health will share two retrospectives to celebrate this milestone occasion.

The podcast is designed to be a platform where physicians can learn from the other professionals and patient advocates that make up the health system.

The voice of Pomegranate Health, Mic Cavazzini, has been behind the microphone for the majority of the decade.

“The podcast was launched in June 2015, and I’ve been behind this microphone for nine of those years. It has been a real privilege to work for the RACP and in a small way contribute to the collegiate environments that helps you do your work and stay well."

The podcast has welcomed a vast range of guests who tackle important questions, such as how to make difficult clinical and ethical decisions without being influenced by bias, how to communicate better with patients and colleagues, and how to provide healthcare that’s both efficient and fair.

Mic Cavazzini says, “There haven't just been Physicians of every flavour, but also GPs, critical care specialists, surgeons and nurses, patient advocates and carers, academics and public servants. Our guests have shared their insights, sometimes in quite vulnerable ways.”

With a decade in the vault, there are some impressive statistics:

  • 131 episodes (132 counting Retrospective Part 1)
  • 340 guests
  • 15,000 listeners per episode
  • Heard in 150 countries
  • Over 1.5 million downloads over 10 years

Over the coming two retrospectives, Mic Cavazzini takes listeners on a journey over the last decade, dipping into the back catalogue of 131 episodes to showcase some of the most compelling stories.

Mr Cavazzini will also share some of his motivations and drive in producing the decade-long podcast and how podcast themes are identified from all the domains of medicine and professionalism.

People always ask me how I come up with stories for Pomegranate Health. My reviewers are a motley crew of forty or fifty physicians who I bounce ideas off and send audio drafts to for feedback. I’m so grateful to all these volunteers over the years who’ve dedicated their time, expertise and quite a bit of patience for this armchair expert," said Mr Cavazzini.

Part One of the retrospectives is available to hear now on our website, or wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts.

Did you know that if you are a RACP CPD participant, time spent listening to Pomegranate Health counts towards your CPD hours. We haven’t forgotten Trainees. For RACP Basic Physician Trainees, the Case Report series can be helpful in preparation for long case clinical exams.
