Selection into Training Quality Assurance and Improvement

In 2024, the College Education Committee (CEC) began a new initiative to support the quality assurance and improvement of selection into RACP training programs. This initiative is in response to increased interest by stakeholders, regulators and governments in understanding the activities and outcomes of selection (and by extension, recruitment) processes for training programs and positions.

We heard from trainees regarding selection into training in an anonymous pulse survey (PDF) in November 2019. The work spans both Basic and Advanced Training, including Faculty, Chapter and joint training programs.

Ultimately, our goal with this initiative is to produce an evidence- and stakeholder-informed strategy that:

  • sets out how we can collaborate across sectors to reduce the burden of selection into training activities
  • supports the growth of the physician workforce aligned to community health needs
  • ensures transparent and robust selection practices
There are 3 phases to the Selection into Training Quality Assurance and Improvement initiative:
Stage 1 Discovery

Describes the current state for selection into Basic and Advanced Training in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Stage 2 Evaluation

Appraises the current state with reference to RACP policy and standards, and identifies opportunities for quality improvement to support stakeholders involved in selection.

Stage 3 Response

Focuses on how to address the recommendations emerging from the earlier phases.
