Time limits to complete training
To make sure training stays relevant and manageable, there are time limits for completing each program. These limits apply to all trainees, including those training part time.
Applying for more time
In some circumstances, you can apply for an extension to the time limit to complete your training.
Your request is assessed in line with the Progression through Training Policy and the Flexible Training Policy, which explain when extra time may be approved.
If you’ve already been approved for an extension, this will be taken into account if you apply for more time.
Leave and time limits
Approved leave for the following reasons doesn't accrue towards your time limit to complete training:
- full-time parental leave
- certified medical leave
This is outlined in the Progression through Training Policy and Flexible Training Policy.
Standard time limits
| Length of training program |
Maximum time allowed |
| 3 years |
8 years |
| 4 years |
10 years |
| 5 years |
12 years |
Time limits for dual and conjoint training
If you’re undertaking dual or conjoint training, the time limit for each program is tracked separately—not as a combined total. This is because different programs may have different requirements and levels of overlap.
For example, you may be able to apply for more time if training in 1 program limits your ability to progress in another.
Additional time for dual programs
To allow for this complexity, you’ll automatically get 1 extra year to complete each program.
