Time limits to complete training
To make sure training stays relevant and manageable, there are time limits for completing each program. These limits apply to all trainees, including those training part time.
Standard time limits
| Length of training program |
Maximum time allowed |
| 3 years |
8 years |
| 4 years |
10 years |
| 5 years |
12 years |
Time limits for dual and conjoint training
If you’re undertaking dual or conjoint training, the time limit for each program is tracked separately—not as a combined total. This is because different programs may have different requirements and levels of overlap.
Additional time for dual programs
To allow for this complexity, you’ll automatically get 1 extra year to complete each program.
Example
| Program |
Start date |
Standard time limit |
Revised time for dual trainees |
New completion date |
| General Paediatrics |
February 2025 |
8 years |
9 years |
February 2034 |
| Community Child Health |

9 years |
February 2035 |
Applying for more time
You can apply for an additional extension to the time limit by, for example, providing evidence that 18 months of the rotations required by 1 program were not approved for the second program. In this example:
- 12 months is already covered by the first 1-year extension
- a further 6-month extension could be requested
You can also apply for more time if training in one program limits your ability to train in the other. The committee will assess your request based on the Progression through Training Policy and the Flexible Training Policy.
Leave and time limits
Leave for the following reasons doesn't accrue towards your time limit to complete training:
- full-time parental leave
- certified medical leave
This is outlined in the Progression through Training Policy and Flexible Training Policy.
