AFOEM President's Awards
Nominations for 2026 open 1 October to 5 pm AEDT on 30 November 2025.
The Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) President’s Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by Fellows and trainees to the Faculty.
There are 3 award categories:
- education, training and assessment — Fellows or trainees who have contributed significantly to AFOEM’s education, training and assessment programs
- policy and advocacy — Fellows or trainees who have contributed to AFOEM’s policy and advocacy
- trainee commitment — trainees who have shown an outstanding commitment to AFOEM’s education and training program
2025 Recipients

A/Prof Tony Brown | Education, Training and Assessment
Associate Professor Tony Brown is an occupational environmental health physician and public health physician. He has had an eclectic career in occupational medicine, public health and medical education. He worked in the Discipline of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Newcastle before moving to Dubbo as Director of Population Health and Planning for the local health service. From 2009 to 2022 Tony worked for the School of Rural Health, the University of Sydney based in Dubbo and was the Associate Dean and Head of the School for some years. He is now trying to retire but continues some consulting. He is the Chair of the Great Western Human Research Ethics Committee.
Tony has been involved in the AFOEM training program for a long time. He has been a member and chair of the Faculty Assessment Committee and a regular examiner. He is currently Chair of the Faculty Education Committee and has chaired the Curriculum Review Committee.

Dr David Cleveland | Trainee Commitment
Dr David Cleveland is a Stage C Occupational and Environmental Physician registrar and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Sonic HealthPlus. He is based in North Queensland and holds an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow position at JCU’s Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine and was formerly the trainee representative on the AFOEM Federal Council of Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Cleveland was an author of the first review into Occupational Dust Lung Disease in Queensland coal mine workers and subsequently a co-author of the Office of Industrial Relations: Mine Dust Lung Disease (MDLD) Return to Work’ guidelines. He has presented these guidelines at national and regional conferences.
Dr Cleveland is currently accredited as an AMA, AHP and MRO as well as a Clinical Examiner and Quality Assurance Examiner for the RACGP.
Eligibility
A nominee must be a registered Fellow or active Advanced Trainee of the AFOEM, nominated by a registered Fellow or active Advanced Trainee of the AFOEM.
Nominees are ineligible if they:
- submit a nomination on their own behalf
- have received a President’s Award within the last 3 years
Prize
Recipients of the AFOEM President’s Awards will each receive an AUD$300 gift card and award presented at the AFOEM annual event.

Read the terms and conditions for awards and prizes valued under $1000 and notify your nominee of your intent before submitting your nomination.
Nominations must be submitted in a single PDF file, including:
- a nomination form
- 2 x letters of support from referees
Nominations received without a written citation will be rejected.

Selection process
An Award Review Panel, comprised of the AFOEM President and selected Fellows will review all nominations.
The AFOEM reserves the right not to make an award in any or all categories if all nominations received don’t meet a sufficiently high standard.
