AFPHM News - February 2025

A message from your President

How would you rate us?

This isn't an automated request about your latest Amazon delivery or hotel stay but an invitation from me in this our first restored electronic newsletter to each and every FAFPHM and AFPHM trainee to evaluate how well your elected AFPHM Council has served you.

As an entity within the RACP, the AFPHM Council must develop a three-year Work Plan. This we did sincerely through focused deliberation at a strategic planning day in 2022. The resulting 2023-2025 Work Plan expires at the end of this year. What's in it, you might ask? Our three strategic intentions read as follows:

  • EDUCATION: We will provide excellent training relevant to public health medicine now and in the future for trainees and effective continuing professional development for Fellows throughout their careers, ensuring cultural competence and cultural safety.
  • ENGAGEMENT: We will build a strong, connected engaged professional community of practice for FAFPHMs and trainees across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. We partner effectively with Indigenous organisations and public health physicians.
  • ADVOCACY: We are recognised as a strong advocate for population and public health ensuring the contribution of public health physicians across the broad range of societal and environmental threats to health is increased.

Of 18 deliverables charted against these intentions, Council considers two-thirds to be completed or well on track for completion as per timelines.  Not bad. Better than a pass.

Of course, transparency would mean our Work Plan would be publicly accessible.  This - despite my best efforts - is still not the case.  Our Statement of Purpose is publicly available however and affirms that we seek excellence in public health medicine, education and practice to achieve the highest levels of health for the populations of Australia and New Zealand. We do this through the training and continuing professional development of public health physicians, the promotion of public debate on matters of public health and the encouragement of public health research.

So, how well are we doing?

Professor Jeanette Ward
AFPHM President

AFPHM insights

AFPHM Advanced Training Curriculum Update
In January 2025, AFPHM Council endorsed out of session the new AFPHM Advanced Training Curriculum via a Circular Resolution. An agenda paper has been submitted to the College Education Committee (CEC) for their February meeting outlining the AFPHM Council's decision along with some caveats to consider before implementation. These included the requirement to resource co-design each of a Knowledge Guide and Entrusted Professional Activity pertaining to skills and behaviours for public health physicians in partnership with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Maori peoples.

AFPHM Council Workplan Progress Update to the RACP Board
Like Divisional and other Faculty entities, AFPHM Council must provide a quarterly update through the AFPHM President to the RACP Board. For the reporting period January to March 2025, AFPHM Council affirmed its continuing commitments under the Board-approved AFPHM Workplan 2023-2025. Out of 18 deliverables Council considers two-thirds to be completed or well on track for completion by mid-2025.

Updated AFPHM Regional Committee Terms of Reference
At the end of 2024, AFPHM Council approved updated Terms of Reference for the AFPHM Regional Committees. Our Regional Committees are often the gateway into the Faculty for trainees and Fellows. The Regional Education Coordinator (REC) roles will now directly be appointed to the Faculty Training Committee and remain as 'ex-officio' roles on Regional Committees to ensure communication between the FTC and the regions. The Aotearoa NZ AFPHM Committee's Terms of Reference are expected to be approved at the next AFPHM Council meeting to align the REC role in Aotearoa.
