Stanley Percy Bellmaine was born in Melbourne in 1908, son of Percy Bellmaine, a paper merchant and his wife, Sarah (nee Jenkins.) His early school years were at Scotch College Melbourne but when the family moved to Sydney he continued his education at the Sydney Church of England Grammar School.
He studied medicine at the University of Sydney and, after a distinguished undergraduate record, graduated with first class honours and the University Medal in 1933.
His early resident training was in Sydney at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1934 and subsequently at the St George Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children (RAHC) in 1936 and 1937.
In 1935 he married Doreen (nee Collins.) They had three children: Ann born before the war and John and Sally born after the war.
After leaving RAHC, he went to England to continue his postgraduate studies and held an appointment at the Whipps Cross Hospital in London. While there he gained the Diploma of Child Health of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, England, in 1939.
In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, Dr Bellmaine joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in Belgium and France, and was one of those who made his escape from Europe at Dunkirk. After subsequent service in India he retired from the Army in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
On his return to Australia his career was to be devoted to paediatrics. He passed the MRACP in 1949 whilst an Assistant Paediatrician at King George V Memorial Hospital for Mothers and Babies. He subsequently became Senior Paediatrician in 1953 and Consultant Paediatrician in 1968.
He is particularly remembered for his service to the Australian Paediatric Association for which he was Honorary Secretary for many years before being elected President in 1974.
The University of Sydney appointed him Lecturer in the Care and Diseases of the Newborn in the Department of Obstetrics from 1953 to 1968.
In due course the Australian Paediatric Association became the Australian College of Paediatrics and Dr Bellemaine was President from 1974 to 1975.
He left his Mosman home in Sydney and retired to Kiama on the South Coast where he died in 2003 at the age of 94.
