Born in Toowoomba, Queensland, David Davis studied medicine at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1916. After a brief residency at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, he joined the AIF and saw service overseas in 1 AGH. He became medical superintendent at Repatriation General Hospital, Rosemount, Brisbane, from 1921 to 1924 following which he was appointed honorary physician to outpatients at Brisbane General Hospital and later honorary inpatient physician.
In 1938 and 1939 he undertook postgraduate training in London in medicine and anaesthetics, obtaining the conjoint diploma in 1939. On his return to Brisbane he was appointed anaesthetist at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in addition to his physician post at the Brisbane Hospital. Following part-time Army service in the Second World War from 1940 to 1942 he was a full-time anaesthetist in 116 AGH 1942 to 1943. From the end of 1939 he conducted a private practice in Wickham Terrace as a physician and anaesthetist, and from 1951 he held a visiting physician appointment at Rosemount, his old hospital.
On retiring from practice he moved to Sydney where he spent his last few years.
