I have played a major role in the establishment of Australia’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, including national committees, guideline processes, conferences and research underpinning the technology and delivery strategies used. Many patients have taken the time to personally thank me for these contributions, having themselves undergone testing and having been found to have a curable cancer, or better still an adenoma removed. These people are so grateful for the medical profession having taken the time to prevent illness, not just treat it.
The event that deeply affected me was receiving notice by telephone that I had missed my oral exam for Fellowship.
