Born at Coonoor in southern India in 1909 Harold Dundonald Macky Hercus (usually known as Macky) studied science at Sydney University, graduating with first-class honours in physiology in 1932 and then graduated in medicine in 1937.
He obtained a resident post at Auckland Hospital, New Zealand for the next eighteen months, following which he worked as senior medical officer for the British Phosphate Commissioners at Ocean Island to early 1940. This was followed by four years of service in the New Zealand Army Medical Corps during the Second World War.
After the War he entered general practice in Auckland and held appointments as visiting physician at Karitane Hospital, Auckland, honorary physician to infants at Cornwall Obstetric and Gynaecological Hospital and visiting assistant physician at Green Lane Hospital. He returned to Sydney in the second half of 1948 to carry out research on allergy in the physiology department, University of Sydney. He gained the College Membership at that time and so became one of the first assistant physicians at Green Lane with a higher qualification.
On returning to Auckland he continued his Green Lane appointment, in time becoming a senior visiting physician, and retiring to Sydney after about twelve years of service. He had a particular interest in asthma and maintained a part-time private practice while in Auckland. His brother, Victor, an anaesthetist, held a visiting appointment at Auckland Hospital from 1949 to 1952, moving later to Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. Another brother, John, was a Sydney ophthalmologist.
