Born

Arthur Hunt was born in Sydney, one of seven children of Henrietta and Percival Hunt. His father was a pharmaceutical chemist. He attended Fort Street High School where he was dux in his final year. He studied medicine at Sydney University and graduated with honours in 1918 at the age of twenty-one.
He was appointed a resident medical officer at RPAH and worked under Sir Herbert Maitland before going into private practice at Gloucester, New South Wales. About 1921 he bought ‘Greenheys’ a private hospital at Guildford, New South Wales, where he practised until he was forced to retire due to a cerebral catastrophe and severe angina in December 1958. He also had rooms at 135 Macquarie Street, where he specialised as a diagnostician.
When war came he spent a few months in the Army, but was released to maintain the practice at Guildford since locums were not available and he was the only doctor between Granville and Fairfield. He was on the honorary medical staff of Auburn District Hospital as physician and surgeon.
He was a dedicated physician, respected by his peers and his patients. He was a shy and reserved man, always devoted to his family to whom he would explain the importance of helping each other and others. His hobbies included the garden and he was a keen sportsman. He played Rugby at grade level, achieved a single figure golf handicap at Concord Golf Club and was a top pennant bowls player with the same club. He taught by example so that others would understand that being a doctor is much more than the acquiring of degrees. It is becoming involved in peoples lives and human frailties and gaining their affection and love.
