A story about what deeply affected me was not with a College peer, but an experienced British qualified Paediatrician. This was in the early days of my career, and I was called to a special ward set up to treat children with diphtheria. A six-month-old child lay gasping for breath and quite moribund. But I proceeded to try to help with a tracheostomy, but the child passed away before I was half way there! That really shook me and had me questioning my knowledge and skills. But the paediatrician in charge of the wards counselled me about my practice and reality, and how to manage failures in medicine. It was then I decided to specialise in Public Health, as there were so many children dying of diphtheria, polio and many other infectious diseases. It has been a great career!
