After completing professorial resident/registrar/senior registrar years at Prince Henry/Prince of Wales Hospital and obtaining his MRACP/FRACP in 1974, Kevin spent a year working as a Senior Registrar at the Johannesburg General Hospital and Acting Consultant at Baragwanath Hospital Soweto. His time in (apartheid) South Africa, including exposure to “third world Medicine” and treating an outbreak of Marburg virus had a significant impact on his future life choices.
Kevin proceeded to London for a year at the New Charing Cross Hospital as a Senior Medical Registrar in 1976.
On his return to Australia, Kevin elected to set up practice in regional Port Macquarie on the NSW mid-north coast from 1977 to 2022. He was appointed as the inaugural Director of Cardiology at Port Macquarie Private Hospital and Port Macquarie Base Hospital, having instituted departments of Medicine and Cardiology in both. He was instrumental in the organization and expansion of cardiac medical services in the region, including the formation of the Coronary and Intensive Care Units and a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
In addition, Kevin was instrumental in establishing the Rural Medical School of UNSW (Syd), as well as establishing Port Macquarie as an Examination Site for the FRACP Clinical Exams.
As an Associate Professor, Kevin Alford was a strong supporter of general as well as cardiology teaching, mentoring, and examining at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including positions as Director of Basic, then Advanced Physician Training, and as a Senior National Examination Panel examiner. He instituted rotational terms for interns, residents, and physician trainees and provided strong leadership as a mentor to multiple generations of doctors.
