MB BS Syd (1963) MRACP (1971) FRACP (1964)
Born
03/06/1919
Died

After a junior resident medical officer year at Sydney Hospital he served in the Australian Army Medical Corps. Following his discharge in June 1946 he was appointed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children as a junior resident medical officer and subsequently served as a medical registrar for one year. As an Associate in general practice he gained his MRACP in June 1948 and entered consultant paediatric practice with appointments to the Women's Hospital, Crown Street in 1948 and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in 1949. He was elected a Fellow of the College in June 1963, and in 1966 was appointed a consultant physician to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. As a member of the Honorary Staff, Charles set a high standard of patient care. He was clever, skilful and well read. By his peers he was considered to be tireless in his efforts to serve his patients and was demanding of those who were responsible for providing ancillary investigations. His enthusiasm was sometimes interpreted as a selfish approach to the solution of the problems. His long hours of work matched the long list of investigations of his patients that he had left for the resident medical staff to complete.
In 1957 with Dr Douglas Cohen he conducted a special survey into malignant disease of children. This study was published by the State Cancer Council and led to the formation of a tumour study group so providing consultation for treatment of malignant tumours other than leukaemia. With Charles Sara, a senior anaesthetist at that time, he prompted the Medical Board of the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children to establish a Respiratory Care Committee which led to a Tracheostomy Panel, an important group serving the needs of children with respiratory distress. His other professional activities included consultant appointments to the Northcott Neurological Centre and the Margaret Reid Orthopaedic Hospital. He was a member of the Australian Medical Association, the Endocrine Society of Australia and the Haematology Society of Australia.
