I was born in Kuching, Sarawak in Malaysia in 1938 and completed primary and secondary school education at St Thomas Anglican School, Kuching, Malaysia. I graduated from the University of Adelaide with a MBBS in 1965, and was admitted as a member and later fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. I was appointed as medical and senior medical specialist (State Physician) in the Sarawak General Hospital from 1967-1978. As the first 'Sarawakian' to qualify for the specialist post I assumed the position vacated by the British Colonial Specialist. After leaving the government service I set up a private medical clinic, Sim Medical Clinic, in the city of Kuching where I still practice today. I was the first local medical specialist in Sarawak appointed to take over duties from departing expatriate specialist and personal physician to first four heads of state of Independent Sarawak. I was also a visiting lecturer and examiner in Faculty of Medicine and Health Services for the University of Malaysia. I was a founding member, or held the role of chairman for the Malaysian Medical Association (SB), Malaysian Diabetes Association (SB), Society of Private Medical Practitioners and the National Heart Association of Malaysia Sarawak. I have worked for many local community organisations including the Normah Medical Foundation Charitable Board and served as board member since inception (March 1987) of the Kenyalang Medical Foundation. I have received honours from the Pegawai Bintang Sarawak (PBS), general medical health services to the state in 1974, and the Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN), general services to the nation in 2006.
