Qualifications
MC MB BS Adel (1909) MRACP (1940)
Born
31/08/1888
Died
16/10/1942
John Eric McGlashan was born in South Australia and graduated in medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1909. He was a resident at the Adelaide Hospital for the years 1910 and 1911 and then entered general practice from 1911 to 1924. This period was interrupted by intervals of postgraduate training and by service in the First World War during which he was awarded the Military Cross.
His postgraduate training became orientated towards diseases of the skin and he practised exclusively as a dermatologist after 1924. At this time he moved to Western Australia where he subsequently became senior honorary dermatologist at the Perth Hospital and honorary physician for skin diseases to the Children’s Hospital in Perth, whilst at the same time conducting a busy specialist practice from St George’s Terrace.
He was very active in the section of dermatology of the BMA, being vice-president of the annual meeting of the BMA in Melbourne in 1935 and of the Australasian Medical Congress in Adelaide in 1937.
His postgraduate training in dermatology was undertaken in Europe (London and Vienna) and in the USA (the Mayo Clinic, Chicago and New York) and he must surely have been one of the leaders of his time by recognising the need to acquire learning from travel and from the experience of others.
