Alexander McGregor was born at Austinmer near Wollongong, graduated at the University of Sydney in 1938 and spent his residency at Lewisham Hospital in Sydney and Ipswich Hospital in Queensland. In 1941 he became assistant superintendent at Mount Morgan Hospital. He joined the AIF in January 1942, serving as a captain in 101 AGH and as a physician specialist in 118 AGH.
He passed the Membership examination in November 1945, became medical superintendent at Gladstone Hospital in 1946 after leaving the Army, and then joined a general practice partnership in Toowoomba with Dr Mervyn Hall. He remained there from 1946 until his death in 1970, and had a part-time appointment as specialist physician at Toowoomba Base Hospital.
He was very active in community affairs, being mayor of Toowoomba from 1949 to 1952 and later chairman of the Darling Downs Association for Advanced Education, which played a successful part in the establishment of the Darling Downs Institute of Technology. Well read and interested in the arts, he promoted the cause of tertiary education in the area with more than a little success.
He was killed in a motor vehicle accident while on holiday in Paris.
